E is for Everlasting Gobstoppers

EEverlasting Gobstoppers? That’s right. For children with very little pocket money. You can suck’em forever. You can suck’em, and suck’em and suck’em, and they’ll never get any smaller. Never.

Said Willy Wonka, although he might need to do some more tests.

The fictional Everlasting Gobstopper from Roald Dahl’s book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, is a candy that not only changes colour and flavour, but can never be finished or get any smaller.  b5efdd9d57c4e34515a6b2b12416e281

They’re full of magic and happiness and everything good in the world. They can be one of the things in life you can rely on and guarantee won’t change, because they’re everlasting.

And you believe this because you trust Willy Wonka. You believe him when he tells you the wallpaper has flavours tasty enough to warrant a lick, and you believe him when he introduces you to an Oompa Loompa. Yes this little man is bright orange with green hair. You are not crazy. You are just in the world (and chocolate factory) of Willy Wonka. And you believe it all.

willyWhy? Because he’s Gene Wilder. As much as I admire Jonny Depp for trying to fill his boots, you can’t replace Gene Wilder as the real Willy Wonka. Effortless and weirdly wonderful he’s the true King of chocolate and sweets, and the real Candy Man.

His portrayal of the character is brilliant. He dances and sings at strange times, pretends he can’t understand very simple questions, and shouts words just for the fun of it.

In a story that – if you really think about it – is rather dark at times with poverty and naughty children, Willy Wonka adds light, humor, and excitement. His Everlasting Gobstoppers are used as part of a game to see who he can trust. a9a8efce298ed8be218c6870542001d1

The Everlasting Gobstoppers are among the bizarre fairy-tale land of candy, and the scene where Wonka starts singing Pure Imagination is fantastic and just adds to the magic of it all. That room pretty much sums up childhood fantasy.

The song Pure Imagination is one of my favourites to this day. Who wouldn’t want to leave every care in the world outside the door, and roll around a land with candy grass, swim in a sea of chocolate (even if you’re not allowed to) and drink from a flower teacup things and then eat it?

We need a bit more magic in our lives and I think the Everlasting Gobstopper might just help. If you can’t get hold of one, fear not. Just watch this video and you’ll fall back into childhood with a smile on your face.

  1. I love Willy Wonka!! Such a fun story. I can’t wait to introduce my boys to it. And totally random but is your lip pierced? (looks that way in your pic) I had mine done just like that. I miss it so much!

  2. Hi, visiting from A/Z. I could watch Willie Wonka with Gene Wilder over and over again; a favorite movie of mine indeed! I do agree that Johnny Depp tried, but he was no match for Gene Wilder’s portrayal .

Enjoy the rest of the challenge!
